This book by Joseph T. Glatthaar
explores the alliance formed between the black soldiers and the white
officers of the "colored" units of the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Mr. Glatthaar references Eli in a chapter
on "Prejudice in
the Service" where he describes various actions taken by many Union
commanders in an attempt to reduce the mistreatment of prisoners and the
activity of civilian guerrillas partisan to the Confederacy.

The records of the 15th USCT contain a copy of a letter from the Regiment's adjutant, Lt. Frank W. Whiteham, to Eli's widow Artimesia. On 30 May 1865 he writes that a draft for $1090.40 on a New York bank accompanies the letter. This is the amount collected less $90 for the undertaker and $3 for the draft. This is very likely the only amount she ever received, but still a nice sum of money for the time. |
